Revealed: 5 Times The Mace Has Come Under Serious Attack In Nigeria’s History

The mace being stolen from the senate
No, the disappearance of the mace from the floor of the senate on Wednesday, April 18, 2018, isn’t the first time that lawmaking symbol of authority has come under attack in a Nigerian parliament.
We go back in Nigeria’s history to present five such instances where the mace has either been stolen or used as a weapon of mass destruction.
1. Ebubedike, 1962
Chief Obafemi Awolowo was Premier of the Western Region in 1962 when Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa tried to impose a state of emergency in Nigeria’s western region.
It was a move that didn’t sit well with Awolowo.
As lawmakers deliberated Balewa’s position in the Western regional assembly on May 25, 1962, Mr. Ebubedike (from Ozubulu in Anambra State) who represented Ajeromi/Ifelodun/Badagry East in parliament, seized the mace and deployed same as a head battering weapon; with a fist fight breaking all around him.
As chairs were flung all over the floor of the House, Ebubedike grabbed the mace and dared anyone to come close. When the Speaker, Hon. Prince Adeleke Adedoyin and other lawmakers came close, Ebubedike used the mace on them.
The mace as a weapon of head destruction was thus born in Nigeria.
2. Okadigbo, 2000
Chuba Okadigbo was president of the fourth senate when then President Olusegun Obasanjo began moves to impeach him by using presidency loyalists in parliament.
Okadigbo snatched the mace and took it to his house in Abuja–all in an attempt to stall his impeachment.
When the police arrived Okadigbo’s residence to retrieve the mace, he told them they were only going to get the mace if they killed him.
“The police arrived at 5.55 a.m. (0455 GMT) in six jeeps fully loaded with armed officers”, Okadigbo told the BBC afterwards.
“They told me they had come to collect the mace and that they were acting on orders from the Inspector General of Police. I said I would never give them the mace. I have to be dead before you get the mace, I told them.

“This is executive lawlessness and is unprecedented in Nigeria’s history,” Okadigbo fumed.
After the police left his residence, Okadigbo (fondly called the Oyi of Oyi) took the mace with him to Ogbunike, his home town in Anambra State, and left the senate’s symbol of authority in the custody of a seven foot python.
Okadigbo lost the battle to remain senate president, however, as he was impeached weeks later.
He died on September 25, 2003.
3. Rivers State, 2013
When Speaker Otelemaba Amachree, convened a session of the legislature to amend certain portions of the Rivers State budget on July 9, 2013, he didn’t know trouble was brewing in the horizon.
Hon Evans Bapakaye Bipi who represented Ogu/Bolo constituency, arrived the Rivers House of Assembly with thugs, pounced on house leader Chidi Lloyd and the mace was next.
Reports say a fake mace had been smuggled into the house by the anti-Amaechi lawmakers in an attempt to unseat the speaker.
Rotimi Amaechi is a serving minister and was Governor of Rivers State at the time.
Evans Bipi then walked up to Chidi Lloyd who was a pro-Amaechi lawmaker and slapped him in the face. The speaker who had just arrived the chamber, tried to prevent the slaps and shouting from becoming a full blown fight, but Bipi went for him too; the (fake) mace in his vice grip.
Hon Lloyd then seized the mace from wherever and used it to attack Hon Chinda.
Chinda ended up in a hospital from mace beating.
4. House of Reps, June 2015
On June 23, 2015, lawmakers in the federal House of Representatives didn’t like the fact that the APC was trying to decide their principal officers from Bourdillon, Lagos.
So, they went to war among themselves.
House Speaker Yakubu Dogara and Majority leader Femi Gbajabiamila supporters went for each other’s throats.
Dogara had defeated Gbajabiamila to emerge speaker.
One group of lawmakers tried to grab the mace but that wasn’t allowed to happen by the other group of lawmakers.
The poor mace couldn’t but heave a sigh of relief after.
5. Benue State, June 2015
The APC and PDP lawmakers engaged themselves in a free for all fight at plenary when the speaker of the Benue Assembly, Mr Terkimbi Kyange, read a letter from the APC.
The letter read that the APC was the majority party in the house following the defection of a PDP legislator.
As tempers flared and blows rained, the Sergeant At-Arms quickly removed the mace from harm’s way.
So, yes, Omo-Agege of Delta Central is pretty much in good company.

Read her post below:-

Hello everybody, it is very alarming and shocking that we are taking this big brother naija thingy far. The insults and the curses are getting way out of hand.

This is just a game, we are all one. It’s not like the guys in the house are from another country. They are ours, we are one! By monday, this will all be over, the housemates will go about living their lives what happens then? I see some of the insults in my comment section but I chose to ignore because I believe this will end soon.

Choose whoever you want to support without insulting one another. It is exhausting. Stop with the negativity, stop imposing your choices on others. It is not a do or die affair. Let people breathe.

The Senate plenary was on Wednesday disrupted after suspected thugs invaded the chamber and made away with the mace.
The incident happened few seconds after a suspended senator, Ovie Omo-Agege, entered the chamber.
A reporter observed that about 10 suspected thugs who came to the venue with the senator forced their entrance into the chamber.
Seconds later, the thugs ran out of the chamber with the mace causing pandemonium in the Senate. They left the National Assembly with the mace in a black SUV.
Senator Omo-Agege who is on suspension for 90 days by the senate maintained calmness while the session was thrown into pandemonium by the thugs.
The All Progressives Congress chieftain has denied making away with the mace which has since been recovered with reports that the hoodlums have been nabbed too.
The mace is the symbol of authority of the parliament. One of the security personnel at the entrance of the National Assembly said the thugs told him and other officers they were with the senator.

Banky W Reacts To President Buhari’s Speech That Nigerian Youths Are Lazy

0
Banky W
Nigerian musician, Banky W has reacted to a comment ascribed to President Muhammadu Buhari in which he said that a lot of Nigerian youth want everything free.
Buhari made the speech while speaking at the Commonwealth Business Forum in Westminster on Wednesday. The president said a lot of Nigerian youths have not been to school and they want everything free.
According to the President, “We have a very young population; our population is estimated conservatively to be 180 million. More than 60 percent of the population is below the age of 30. A lot of them have not been to school and they are claiming that Nigeria has been an oil producing country, therefore they should sit and do nothing and get housing, healthcare and education free.”
Reacting, Banky W took to his Instagram page while sharing the video and wrote: “So apparently, this is what our President thinks about “a lot of the Nigerian youth”. What do you guys think?

I have a suggestion. Whether you agree, or disagree with the President’s comments, this time, do a little bit more than posting, commenting, retweeting, and complaining. Go and register to vote.

I’ve sat in countless meetings, seminars, conferences and hangouts with young people. We are always great at pointing out our issues.. but the truth is that we can sit around and complain from now until Kingdom come. IT WILL NOT MATTER. INEC will not count your tweets. Let’s turn the month of May into #PVCMay.
Even if you don’t know who you’re voting for.. even if you hate every single candidate. At least register.. so that if someone comes along who you feel compelled to support, you can.
If you’re really serious about wanting Nigeria to be a better place, go and register to vote. Get your PVC asap. The registration period will end LONG before the elections come, so if you think you can wait until next year, you are wrong.

Get your PVC today. Or don’t bother complaining about anything, because it won’t matter. Your tweets will not count. Your vote will.”

As one of the richest musicians, it might interest us to check out some of the sources wherewith Wizkid makes his income and verify their level of genuineness. Let’s go on.

Wizkid is the Chairman and CEO of the “StarBoy” music record label; a label which is in partnership with “Disturbing” London, and hosts the likes of Maleek Berry, LAX, and Mutayo Flif. He started the record label in 2013, after a dispute with his former boss, Banky W. Wizkid makes money from the booking of his artistes, singles release and album sale (although he’s still the only one to have released an album under the record label).

When Wizkid signed a deal with MTN for N40Million, they must have thought he was in for the long term but with no significant improvement on the table when it was time for renewal, GLO didn’t waste time to pounce waving an endorsement deal in the excess of N100million to the superstar.

His present luxurious house saw him part ways with a whopping sum of N38 Million, and it is located in the coveted neighbourhood of Lekki, Lagos. He built another one in Bariga close to a Petrol Station which people claim also belongs to him. The Bariga crib is reportedly worth around N25 Million.

Olamide Range

Olamide Cars

When your current net worth stands at an impressive $6Million, it’s not a bad idea to buy a N6 Million Toyota Venza for your producer. Olamide also has a number of fast cars himself, but his latest automobile addition was the Land Rover Range Rover which is worth around N15 Million. Prior to that, he has acquired the Honda 2012 Model for around N6 Million and the Mercedes G-Class for around N22 Million.

Olamide Gwagon

The YBNL boss is one not known for a loud lifestyle so it comes as little surprise if his acquisitions are of moderate range or not as lousy as many other celebrities. He even refuses to answer questions when asked about his investments and acquisitions but we all know a few possessions can’t slip the net of the press
